Bureau of Honorary Titles · Pyongyang

A small bureau with a large mandate.

The Republic’s most exclusive honours roll, opened to the world and administered properly.

The Bureau began with one question. Why should the Republic’s most magnificent titles belong to a single family?

For seventy years the grandest honours were reserved for the Kim dynasty alone. Supreme Commander. Guiding Sun Ray. Shining Star of Paektu Mountain. The Bureau judged this a waste of perfectly good glory.

Eight officers were assigned, and the roll was opened. Every title carries the same ceremony, stock and line in the register. Your standing is recorded, and it is permanent.

On the name

Why we are called the Kimmies.

Every title on the roll was worn by a Kim. Il Sung, Jong Il, Jong Un. Forty-eight honours, one surname.

The Bureau needed a word for the honours themselves, not the family. Officers began calling them the Kimmies. The name was never approved. It was simply never corrected.

A holder of one is also a Kimmie. This was not planned either.
